A Message From Service Chair Rachel Wedeward about the LISSA Book Drive

LISSA’s book drive is quickly approaching! Since I became Service Chair in Spring 2015, my goal has been to bring service opportunities into a program and career field that is typically considered service oriented. This book drive opens a window of opportunities to give back to the Oak Park community in a small and vital way. The Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society Children’s Clinic is incredibly grateful and excited to start an opportunity to partner with the GSLIS and with DU LISSA. Roughly each year, the Infant Welfare Society needs approximately 10,000 books to keep up with the number of children attending the clinic. These books are used in waiting rooms, and children are provided books to take home with them at the end of an appointment. As a result of having books in the clinic, children who attend the Infant Welfare Society Clinic are able to learn, become excited about what they are learning, and ultimately have a therapeutic outlet. I hope you all have a chance to give in the next two and a half weeks to an organization that is such an asset to the Oak Park and River Forest communities. I also want to thank my other committee members who have helped make this possible: Abrar Alkusaimi, Lorrie Hansen, and Guadalupe Colin. I would also like to thank the Oak Park River Forest Infant Welfare Society Children’s Clinic for helping to start this partnership opportunity.

The book drive will start on Monday June 22nd, and will go until Thursday July 9th on the first floor of Rebecca Crown. Children’s books for all ages can be donated (examples: chapter, picture, or coloring, Spanish or bilingual). Books donated must NOT be damaged and should be appropriate for children age 0-14. For questions or concerns on the book drive or acceptable donations, please me, LISSA Service Chair Rachel Wedeward at wederach@my.dom.edu.
