The Butler Center is looking for volunteers!

LISSA received this email from Stephanie Swope:

“I am emailing to tell you about a fun special volunteer opportunity through the Butler Center coming up next month. On April 28, we are going to be joining forces with Open Books to hold a free “book fair”.

Held simultaneously with the Open Books sidewalk sale at the Open Books store (213 W. Institute Pl., Chicago), we will be giving away children’s and young adult books to community members. We are also hoping to have a craft table so that kids who attend can make a bookmark to take home with their brand new book.

Please note: Each child in attendance will receive one book. Depending on how things go, we may allow parents to pick out a teen book for themselves – modeling reading is important! – but at this point we are planning on one book per person in attendance so that we have enough to go around.

The event will last from noon to 3 pm, with some time before and after for set-up and tear-down. Volunteers will help attendees pick out books, as well as help with the bookmark station (this will be more of a supervisory thing – I am certainly not going to expect you to be a great artist or super crafty!).

If you are interested in volunteering, either for a two-hour block or for the whole four hours, please email me (sswope@dom.edu) and I will send you a sign-up sheet so that we can have an idea of how many volunteers we will have helping us on that day.”

Association Night 2012 was a great success. We would like to thank our panel of Associations who took the time out of their busy schedules to talk to us about what their Association has to offer.

Best of all, they shared job and interview tips!

1. Research the library or organization prior to the interview.

2. Join LISSA while at Dominican. It shows leadership and demonstrates the ability to work on committees. We were fortunate enough to have Bridget Bulger from Special Library Association, fellow alumni who served on LISSA. (LISSA gives this tip a thumbs up!)

3. Be prepared to answer different questions.

4. Join Associations for networking with other librarians and to build friendships. You’ll be surprised at the lasting friendships and fun you can have.

5. Remember that Social Media can’t fully replace face to face contact.

6. Be a mover and a shaker! Think beyond and look to the future of how the profession is changing.

7. There are so many different places to work besides public, academic, or school libraries. The government and corporate sector employ many librarians. Widen your job search and you might be surprised at what you will find.

8. It’s OK not to know what you want to do when you leave Dominican University and start job searching.

9. On interviews, ask what the organizational climate is like. You want to make sure it’s a good fit for you and the potential employer. You are interviewing them just as much as they are interviewing you.

10. Sign up for listservs for tips and answers to questions from fellow librarians.

11. Open Cover Letters is a helpful website for writing cover letters.

12. Do mock interviews with faculty, or even a family member.

13. Ask questions on an interview. The likelihood of getting a job decreases if questions are not asked. This is an opportunity to define yourself as a professional by asking well thought out questions.

14. Don’t be scared to lead with any projects or programs you participated in on your resume. Always include volunteer information on your resume, especially if you don’t have library related work experience. Extracurricular activities demonstrate the ability to balance multiple projects.

15. Don’t disregard anything you’ve done; you never know how that can relate to an aspect of the job you are applying for.
